Protecting Nest Boxes from Predators

We’ve seen first-hand the damage predators like grey squirrels can cause to nest boxes, from chewing through lids and entrance holes to pulling entire boxes loose. After years of observing and learning, we’ve tried and tested a range of predator control methods to help keep garden birds safe.
At Habi-Box, our Signature nest boxes can be customised with protective features like metal plates, which are widely recognised as one of the most effective ways to prevent squirrel damage. We’ve also trialled alternative methods, including roof mesh, extended entrance designs, and retrofitted tubes. Each of these has shown success in more severe cases.

If you’d like to add one of these protective features to your nest box, or want to learn more about predator control, just get in touch. We’re always happy to help.

How to Clean Your Nesting Box Safely and Responsibly

All of our nesting and habitat boxes include an access panel, making annual cleaning simple and safe. For bird boxes, we recommend cleaning between October and January. For hedgehog houses, wait until the summer months. Always wear gloves, as nesting material may contain parasites or other unwanted visitors

If you think your box is still in use, wait until it’s empty before opening it. Never disturb any wildlife that has chosen your box as their home.

Please note, bat boxes should never be opened or disturbed. Bats are a protected species in the UK, and only licensed professionals are permitted to monitor or handle them.
